The exam for entry to Year 7 in September 2017 is open to boys born between 1 September 2005 and 31 August 2006. It comprises two papers, of about an hour each, which assess:
• verbal reasoning/English literacy
• non-verbal reasoning
To be considered for entry to the School in Year 7 during September 2017, parents must:
1. Complete an application to the School to take the Consortium Entrance Exam
2. Apply to their home Local Authority (LA) in accordance with the LA applications process
1. Application to the School
Our Entrance Exam is operated by the Consortium of Schools in Shropshire, Walsall & Wolverhampton. They will be held by all schools in the Consortium on the same day (Monday 19th September 2016).
There are two boys’ schools in the exam Consortium
• Queen Mary's Grammar School (Walsall)
• Adams’ Grammar School (Newport, Shropshire)
Candidates may only sit the exam once; however parents may want their son to be considered for both schools. By sitting the exam at either school your son’s result can be counted for entry to both schools, but you need to indicate this when you complete the online application form.
The deadline for applications was Friday 1st July 2016. Parents who have not yet applied should call the School for advice.
The date of the main entrance exam was Monday 19th September 2016. The school will consider arrangements to test candidates who did not sit the exam on this date, but parents must contact the School for further advice.
If a candidate is ill on the day of the exam, arrangements will be made for them to sit the exam on an alternative date. Parents will be asked to provide medical evidence of the illness within 5 days of the main exam date. The School cannot make any allowance for exam performance which may have been adversely affected by illness on the day.
The School uses independent experts to set and mark the exam, calculating a total score for each candidate. We expect results to be posted to parents on 17th October 2016.
The school uses the scores to rank candidates. This ranking is shared with our LA as part of the coordinated admissions process for Local Authorities, and the LA’s allocate places in rank order. Parents will be informed by their home LA which school their son has been offered a place at in March 2017.
Special arrangements may be agreed for children who satisfy the Governors that they have special education needs, or suffer from disability. Parents who wish to request special arrangements must complete a separate form, which will be sent to them within 14 days after they have submitted the above online application form.
The School will require independent medical/other evidence supporting the application.
